The moment came with 21.1 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Miami Trace Panthers senior Andrew Guthrie entered Tuesday’s game against Waynesville needing 15 points to reach 1,000 for his career.

Late in the third quarter, a teammate took a shot and missed and Guthrie grabbed the rebound and made the shot that gave him 1,001 points for his career.

The game was stopped for a few moments as Guthrie received a rousing cheer and extended ovation for the accomplishment.

He was joined briefly on the court by his parents, Brad and Jennifer, for a few photos to help commemorate the moment.

The game came down to the last couple of seconds, as the Panthers fired a long-distance shot that fell short as the Spartans escaped with a 57-55 victory.

Guthrie finished with a game-high 17 points, setting his current career point total at 1,002.

Junior Bryson Osborne scored 12 for Miami Trace and junior Brady Armstrong had eight points.

Junior Nick Warren led the Spartans with 16 points.

Senior Isaac Elliott had 12 points for Waynesville and senior Blaise Sizer scored 10.

“I couldn’t be any more proud of our kids for their resiliency and their fight,” Miami Trace head coach Ben Ackley said. “We didn’t take care of the ball very well. We made mistakes tonight that we haven’t been making all year.

“Waynesville outplayed us tonight,” Ackley said. “They’re a real solid club. We knew they had four or five kids that could score the basketball.”

As for players who have scored 1,000 or more points for Miami Trace boys basketball, Ackley mentioned some of them: David Andrews, Art Schlichter, Jason King, Terrell Baker, Aaron Trainer and Cedric Pettiford. To that likely incomplete list goes the name of Andrew Guthrie.

“Drew has done it the right way,” Ackley said. “He’s a great young man. When we first took this program over, he embraced us. I can’t say enough about him. He’s on a football scholarship, but he loves his basketball, too. He gives us everything he’s got.

“We’re super proud of him,” Ackley said. “I just wish we could have got him a win on this historic night.”

Miami Trace is now 16-3 overall and Waynesville improves to 11-7.

The Panthers host the Washington Blue Lions for the Frontier Athletic Conference championship Saturday night. There is a freshman boys game between Miami Trace and Washington at 1:30 p.m., followed by the j-v girls, then j-v boys, followed by the varsity girls and finally, the varsity boys game not before 7:30 p.m.
