The public is invited to spend Valentine’s Day weekend with Washington High School as it presents the international smash hit musical “Mamma Mia!” on Feb. 14, 15, and 16 when the Historic Washington Auditorium will become the beautiful islands of Greece as students perform the enchanting story and ABBA’s timeless music.
The WHS production of “Mamma Mia!” will play at 7 p.m on Feb. 14 and 15 while the Sunday matinee on Feb. 16 will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at whsoh.booktix.com. Prime Reserved (BLUE) section is $10, and Reserved (GREEN) section is $6. Four hours prior to a given performance, online sales will close. Those interested may still purchase tickets at the door and all tickets sold at the door will be $10.
According to Washington Court House City Schools (WCHCS) Director of Marketing and Communications Trevor Patton, over 60 million people from around the globe have fallen in love with the characters, the enchanting story, and ABBA’s music, which make “Mamma Mia!” the ultimate feel-good show. This sunny, funny, international sensation unfolds on a Greek island paradise when on the eve of her wedding, a young woman’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.
Non-stop laughs and explosive dance numbers, along with the magic of ABBA’s hit songs that include “Super Trouper,” “Dancing Queen,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and “SOS,” combine to make this enchanting show a trip down the aisle the audience will never forget.
“Mamma Mia!” is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia.” Ulvaeus and Andersson, who composed the original music for ABBA, were involved in the development of the show from the beginning. Singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been involved financially in the production and she has also been present at many of the premieres around the world.
Internationally, “Mamma Mia!” has grossed $4 billion worldwide since its 1999 debut and a film adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård and Julie Walters was released in July 2008.
As of 2020, the show has productions in London’s West End, where it is the seventh longest-running show in West End history, as well as various international productions. Its Broadway incarnation closed in September 2015 after a 14-year run, making it the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history.
