Spencer Minyo, a 2018 graduate of Washington C.H. High School, was recently recognized by the Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA) as one of 82 of the state’s top students during the 29th-annual Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Awards Program.
The award, named in honor of Ohio’s 31st State Superintendent of Public Instruction, was established in 1989 by OESCA to promote and recognize outstanding student leaders for their academic achievement and service to their school and communities. One senior from each county in Ohio is eligible to receive this honor, and Minyo was selected as the Fayette County winner.
“Over the last 29 years, OESCA has recognized over 2,000 scholars and student leaders during this event,” said Beth Justice, Southern Ohio ESC superintendent. “We wish Spencer great success as he pursues his studies at the college level.”
Spencer was ranked first in his class and plans to attend Miami University where he will major in molecular biology and continue his education by attending medical school. Spencer plans to pursue an area of concentration in medical genetics with the long-term goal of being a physician.
Spencer is known throughout his school community as an athlete, musician, scholar and student leader.
Throughout high school, Spencer has been a member of the swim team, marching band, pep band, jazz band, and symphonic band, and has participated in several high school musicals.
Additionally, Spencer is a member of the DECA business club and has owned and operated his own lawn care business since 2014.
Spencer is also active in his community serving as a museum board member for the Fayette County Museum, Fayette County 4-H camp counselor, Jr. Fair Board and Hi-Y member.
Spencer has also been called upon to serve in leadership roles such as president, historian, treasurer, section leader and team captain in many of the school and community organizations in which he is a member.
Spencer has been recognized with several honors and awards including, in part, being named a Buckeye Boys State representative, winner of the DECA District Marketing Management Competition, and the 4-H State Achievement Award for Photography.
Spencer is the son of Debbie and John Minyo.
