Red Cross recognizes Washington High School students

Washington High School sponsors multiple blood drives throughout the year. The Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates class, or JOGs, coordinate these blood drives with the assistance of the American Red Cross.

Students play an integral role in each blood drive, including not only their blood donation, but also in volunteering their time to do the marketing and registration components to make sure the blood drive is successful.

This year, the student leaders of the JOGs program were asked to hold two blood drives. With assistance from the Washington High School student council, 66 units of blood were collected this year. The American Red Cross recognized this achievement by awarding a $250 scholarship to a deserving student. This year’s recipient was chosen based on her example in volunteering and donating. This year’s scholarship recipient is WHS senior, Taylor Hurles.

The American Red Cross also recognizes high school leaders through the American Red Cross High School Leadership program. To be eligible, students must successfully donate at least three times. Eleven students met the criteria for Washington High School: Kaila Howard, Taylor Hurles, Marriah McGraw, Kyle Moore, Mickenna Nash, Jacie Prater, Audrey Shaeffer, Lucas Slaton, Alexis Tyree, Kaitlyn Woods, and Katelyn Young. For this accomplishment, each student was awarded an honorary Red Cord and a Red Cross lapel pin to be worn at graduation.
