Washington High School sophomore and first year DECA Club member, Spencer Minyo, took first place in his category (Principals of Marketing) during the DECA State contest held this past weekend at the Columbus Convention Center.
DECA is a club at Washington High School, not an accredited class. All of the 20-plus schools Minyo beat out have no clubs, only accredited classes.
When asked why he was drawn to this after school club, Minyo responded that he “has always admired Mr. Penwell (DECA Club coordinator) and wanted to take one of his classes. I couldn’t fit a business class in my schedule so I joined the club.”
Minyo said he also believes being part of DECA will help make him more appealing to colleges and the curriculum gives him “a better start in life.” Washington High School Principal Tracy Rose shared how proud he was of Minyo’s sophomore year accomplishment, his work ethic and “what a wonderful representative Minyo was for Washington High School.”
Minyo will go on to Nashville at the end of April to participate in the national contest. Shared Minyo, “I had a blast at state and I’m looking forward to the nationals.”
