The discovery by police of a stolen vehicle in Washington C.H. Sunday night reportedly led to a short foot pursuit that resulted in an arrest and the recovery of methamphetamine.

On Sunday at around 10 p.m. on Columbus Avenue, a Washington C.H. Police Department officer spotted a Ford Focus, which matched the description of a vehicle that had earlier been reported stolen. The license plate number also matched the plate of the stolen vehicle, reports said.

The vehicle pulled into the Walgreen’s parking lot and at that time the officer activated his cruiser’s overhead lights. The vehicle continued to the rear of the lot and then stopped, according to reports. The defendant, later identified as Thomas A. Cornett, 45, of Greenfield, quickly exited the vehicle and ran northbound, police said.

The officer reportedly yelled for Cornett to stop and gave him several warnings that a taser would be used if he did not comply, according to reports. The suspect allegedly ran to the rear of 1226 E. Temple St. and continued to try to avoid the officer.

Once the suspect refused to comply to repeated orders, the officer deployed the taser, which took the suspect to the ground, reports said. Cornett was taken into custody, charged with receiving stolen property, a fourth-degree felony.

Police reportedly found a plastic bag on Cornett’s person with a large white rock inside. The substance later field tested positive for methamphetamine. He also allegedly had two needles in his pants pocket and several coffee filters with a white substance on them.

Cornett was additionally charged with possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, possession of drug abuse instruments, a first-degree misdemeanor, and obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor. He reportedly has felony warrants for his arrest out of Highland and Montgomery counties.

Cornett is currently being incarcerated in the Fayette County Jail.
