The long trip to Fairfield Union High School (near Lancaster in Fairfield County) was a successful one for the Washington Blue Lion baseball team as they returned home with a 2-0 victory Thursday.
The win is a Sectional championship for Washington.
The Blue Lions (16-10) will next play at Athens High School in the District semifinals Monday at 5 p.m. against Marietta. The Tigers defeated Meigs Thursday, 10-0.
Jarett Patton pitched a complete game shutout for the win for the Blue Lions. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out four.
Jon Hillberry pitched seven innings for Fairfield Union, suffering the loss.
He allowed five hits and two runs (neither earned) with no walks and four strikeouts.
Washington scored two runs in the top of the second and the pitching of Patton and the defense behind him (no errors) made that hold up.
In the second, Griffin Shaw led off and reached on an error.
Patton followed with a single, Shaw advancing to second.
Logan Jackson singled to left field, loading the bases.
There was an error on the outfielder that allowed Shaw to score.
After the first out was recorded, Nick Barrett singled to left, scoring Patton.
Conner Chrisman and Brian Wilson also had hits for the Blue Lions.
“Jarett was getting ahead of hitters all night long,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “His pitches were really moving, making it hard for Fairfield Union to make good contact.
“Defensively we made plays all night,” Rhodus said. “We came up with a couple of clutch hits in the second inning to give us a 2-0 lead.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of these young men,” Rhodus said. “They have grown so much over the year and I’m glad to see their hard work pay off. We are a family and it took all 20 guys to win this game. Each guy has a job and they all fulfilled their duties.”
