LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OHIO — The local high school gymnastics team completed their season with a sound and impressive performance at Lakota East High School in the Southwest District tournament held Feb. 18, 2023.
Miami Trace, competing in this new district, (as the state re-vamped the representation of schools in the four districts), placed ninth out of 15 complete school teams. The Southwest district had 30 schools represented at the tournament.
Miami Trace freshman Tori Johnson placed 25th out of a total of 78 gymnasts competing on all four events.
The stand-out Panther gymnast placed 24th out of 99 on vault; 20th out of 95 on uneven bars; 31st out of 104 on balance beam and 41st out of 101 on floor exercise to lead her team to the ninth place finish.
Washington senior Abby Rose retired her gymnastic career placing 33rd out of 78 in the all-around. The Blue Lion leader earned an Academic All-Ohio Award for achieving a 3.7 cumulative grade point average all four years.
Miami Trace senior McKinley Kelley placed 39th out of 78 in the all-around. Kelley was presented an All District Sportsmanship Award.
Both Rose and Kelley also received District Four-Year Varsity Awards.
The team chalked up seven brand new personal best scores in giving their best performances to finish out the season.
