Lady Lions fall in Sectional final to Fairland

PROCTORVILLE — The No. 16 seed Washington Lady Lions (5-18) traveled over 200 miles round trip on Thursday evening, Feb. 16 as they took on the Fairland Lady Dragons in a Sectional championship basketball game.

Fairland (22-0) was voted the No. 1 seed in the Southeast District and finished ranked No. 2 in Division II in the final AP poll.

Washington led twice in the opening quarter, 5-3 and 8-5, but the end of the first quarter saw the Lady Dragons ahead 14-8.

Fairland would explode for 29 points in the second quarter, holding Washington to just 10 points and forcing several Lady Lion turnovers with an aggressive full-court press. At the half, Fairland led 43-18.

Fairland would pour in another 24 points in the third quarter to just five points from Washington, extending their lead to 67-23 going into the fourth and final period.

The Lady Dragons would add another 15 points to their total, and Washington would add four points to make the final score 82-27 in favor of Fairland.

Fairland will move on to the District semifinals and take on No. 8 seed Circleville on Monday, Feb. 20 at 6:15 p.m. at Logan High School.

Statistically for Washington, Megan Sever led the Lady Lions with eight points, followed by Calleigh Wead-Salmi with six, Allie Mongold with five, Calee Ellars and Maggi Wall with three, and Eliana Racine with two.

Statistically for Fairland, Bree Allen led the Lady Dragons with 27 points, followed by Bailey Russell with 14, Kamryn Barnitz with 10, Addison Godby with eight, Isa Taliaferro and Reece Barnitz with seven, Kylee Bruce with five, and Tomi Hinkle with four.

In other area Sectional tournament games Thursday evening, No. 7 seed New Lexington defeated No. 10 seed Miami Trace by a score of 52-31. New Lexington will play No. 2 seed Unioto, who defeated Vinton County 87-20 on Thursday evening. The game between New Lexington and Unioto will be played at Piketon High School on Monday, Feb. 20 at 6:15 p.m.

No. 3 seed Sheridan defeated No. 14 seed Logan Elm by a score of 50-32. They will play No. 11 seed Athens who upset No. 6 seed Jackson by a score of 52-43. Sheridan and Athens will meet on Monday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. at Piketon High School.

No. 5 seed Warren lost to No. 12 seed Fairfield Union in an upset by a score of 31-26. Fairfield Union will advance to play No. 4 seed Marietta who defeated No. 13 seed McClain by a score of 57-27. Fairfield Union and Marietta will play on Monday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. at Logan High School
