Adena named to Newsweek’s List of the Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces

CHILLICOTHE, OH – The parking lot of Adena Health System’s PACCAR Medical Education Center recently was lined with signs bearing more than 230 names.

While not quite of the magnitude of the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, the signs were a tribute to the more than 230 caregivers who have worked for the health system for 10 years or longer. Many of those caregivers – eight of whom have more than 40 years of service — drove through that asphalt red carpet of sorts, soaking in the cheers of Adena’s executive team, receiving a meal and other gifts, and accepting heart-felt individual thank yous from leaders for the work they do every day.

That type of longevity not only demonstrates the dedication, love, and caring Adena caregivers have for the patients and communities they serve, but also the health system’s commitment to creating a positive, caring environment in which they can provide that care. That commitment has been honored by Newsweek, which announced it has included Adena as #93 on its annual ranking of the Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces®.

“Adena is a collection of extremely talented and compassionate individuals dedicated to serving the health care needs of our communities, but we are also a group of passionate and engaged employees that care for each other and represent our organization proudly,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Heather Sprague. “This validation by Newsweek comes as no surprise because we see it every day in the work being done in our clinical spaces and out in the community. When you create a culture of support, diversity, teamwork, equity, inclusion, respect and development, your employees will be happiest and most satisfied at work. Adena’s Guiding Principle states ‘Let all that you do be done in love’, so it is fitting that Adena is now recognized as a Most Loved Workplace.”

Newsweek publishes its annual list in collaboration with the Best Practice Institute, a leadership development and benchmark research company. The list recognizes companies that put respect, caring, and appreciation for their employees at the center of their business model and, in doing so, have earned the loyalty and respect of the people who work for them.

The results were determined after surveying more than 1.4 million employees from businesses with workforces varying in size from 50 to more than 10,000. To identify the top 100 companies for the Newsweek ranking, companies were evaluated and scored based on employee survey responses; an analysis of external public ratings from sites such as Comparably, Careerbliss, Glassdoor, Indeed, and Google; and direct interviews with and written responses from organization officials.

The surveys looked at five critical areas to gauge employee sentiment, including how positive they feel about their future with the organization, career achievement, how much employer values align with employee values, respect shown at all levels and the amount of collaboration within the organization. Other areas such as inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging, and organizational response and adaptability to the COVID-19 pandemic in such things as return-to-office rules were also analyzed in relation to the five critical areas measured.

Those organizations named to the list includes both U.S. firms and those based overseas that have a strong U.S. presence.

“The companies on this list represent the best at placing love at the center of their employee’s experience,” said Louis Carter, CEO, Best Practice Institute. “The number of applications this year and analysis of survey data reinforces our original findings that love is the strongest predictor of the strength of a company’s culture, employee engagement, and satisfaction.”

“As a result of ‘The Great Resignation,’ more companies recognize the importance of focusing on employee satisfaction to not only attract but retain top talent,” said Nancy Cooper, Global Editor in Chief, Newsweek. “The businesses on this year’s list clearly demonstrated that commitment.”
