Recently I sent a signed contract through the mail to a contractor that we had done business with before. He contacted me a few days later and said that he had not received it. I told him the day that I had put it in the mail and the address that I had sent it to. He then informed me that he had moved his office. The very next day I received the contract back with a yellow sticker on the front of the envelope which read; “return to sender, forwarding time expired.”
I had signed the contract and the agreement had been made but the other party had not received it. After I had put it in the mail I had no reason to think it would be returned to me. I started to think of the times in my life that I assumed everything was in order, to find out that it was not. How many times do we go to bed at night, then wake up in the morning to a whole new set of circumstances? Circumstances that are totally unforeseen and many times can seem to just ruin our day. These things can be referred to as the cares of life.
Jesus addressed these things in Matthew chapter 13 and gave us the answer. He had told a story of a farmer sowing good seed on four different types of soil. The first soil was beaten down so that it was hard, the second was very rocky, the third was overgrown by thrones, but the forth was good rich soil.
Matthew 13:23; “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
After I had mailed that contract I thought everything was in order until I received it back with the, “return to sender,” sticker on it. That is like the sower in Jesus’ story. He sowed the seed and supposed that the soil would produce fruit, but only one type of soil did. There were things in the other types of soil that prevented proper growth; much like using a wrong address on a letter.
When you wake up in the morning and find that things are not working out as you thought they would, just know that not everything in your life is unproductive. There has also been good soil in your life that you have sown into. Oh, by the way; the proper address was included on that yellow sticker. I set it to that address and everything worked out.
These are the everyday issues we address at the Gathering Place every Wednesday evening at 7 and Sunday morning at 9:30 and 10:30. We have youth group and also recovery classes every Sunday evening at 6. Come and join us.
