The first day of the Division II District track and field meet was held under sunny skies and breezy conditions Tuesday, May 17 at Washington High School.
Seven events were contested as finals Tuesday: both 4 x 800-meter relays, the boys discus, pole vault and long jump and the girls high jump and shot put.
The Washington Blue Lions boys’ team was tied for fourth place after four events with Minford, each with 14 points.
Zane Trace led the competition with 28 points and Hillsboro and McDermott Northwest were tied for second with 15 points.
McClain was 12th with four points scored.
On the girls’ side, after three events, Wheelersburg was in first place with 22 points.
Hillsboro was tied with Unioto for fourth place, each with 10 points; McClain was tied with Waverly for sixth place with nine points.
The Lady Lions of Washington did not score in the high jump, shot put or 4 x 800-meter relay.
In the 4 x 800-meter relay for girls, Unioto won with a time of 10:29.26.
Also qualifying to next week’s Regional: Circleville, second, 10:41.91; Hillsboro, third, 11:07.77 and Logan Elm, fourth, 11:11.36.
Hillsboro’s runners were: Gracie Thoroman, Brooklyn Minton, Ramsey Haines and Bree Bailey.
Washington’s team of Megan Sever, Kaithlyn Maquilling, Madison Hayes and Shelbee Crago placed 11th in 12:33.38.
McClain’s quartet of Brooklyn Baldwin, Katrina Sturgeon, Sierra Barton and Rachelle Priest placed ninth with a time of 12:00.96.
Unioto won the boys 4 x 800-meter relay in 8:21.98. Second place went to McDermott Northwest (8:43.52), followed by Waverly was third in 8:44.15 and Logan Elm grabbed the final Regional qualifying spot in 8:55.06.
McClain’s Luke Bliss, D.J. Frost, Andrew Newland and Mason Reichman finished fifth in 8:58.75.
Hillsboro’s Nick Turner, Tate Davis, Corbin Winkle and Cameron Smart finished seventh in 9:09.01.
The Blue Lions did not enter a team in this event.
In the boys pole vault, Washington’s Jacob Stone qualified to the Regionals with a third place finish at 12’ 6”.
Tyler Shipley of Westfall won the District at 12’ 10” and Zach Buitendorp of Circleville was second at 12’ 6”.
Zane Pickerrell of Zane Trace took fourth at 11’ 10”
Washington’s Faris Abdulghani placed sixth at 10’ 0”.
Hillsboro’s Wesley Bailey was eighth and teammate Austin Bledsoe was ninth, both with a height of 9’ 6”.
In the discus throw, Alan Austin of Piketon won with a throw of 174’ 4”.
Nalin Robinson of Zane Trace was second at 164’ 3”, Noah Fetters of Zane Trace was third at 146’ 6” and Alex Baer of McDermott Northwest took the final Regional qualifying spot, placing fourth with a throw of 144’ 0”.
Hillsboro’s Derek Whitt was fifth at 130’ 2”; McClain’s Michael Stevenson was ninth with a throw of 119’ 4”; Robbie Wise of McClain was 11th at 114’ 3” and Ayden Clemons of Hillsboro was 13th at 111’ 2”.
The Blue Lions did not have anyone in this event.
Washington’s Rocky Jones qualified to Regionals in the long jump, placing fourth with a leap of 20’ 4 1/4”.
Luke Rader of Minford won the District at 21’ 6 1/2”; Anthony Richards of Hillsboro was second at 21’ 1/4” and Lucas Ray of Zane Trace was third at 20’ 6”.
Cole Hargett of McClain placed 11th at 17’ 6 1/2”.
Ashley Hegarty of Westfall won the girls high jump, clearing the bar at 5’ 2”.
Gracie Perkins of Wheelersburg was second, also with a height of 5’ 2”.
Ava Jenkins of Northwest was third at 5’ 1” and Delaney Tackett of Waverly was fourth at 4’ 10”.
Eden Edenfield of Hillsboro placed fifth at 4’ 8”; Anna Eikenberry of McClain was sixth at 4’ 6”.
In the shot put, Karley Kouns of Wheelersburg won with a throw of 38’ 2”.
Olivia Adams of Logan Elm was second at 36’ 2 3/4”; Lily Barnes of McClain placed third at 33’ 6 1/2” and Jermya Powell of Portsmouth took fourth at 33’ 3 1/2”.
Washington’s Megan Sever placed ninth with a throw of 27’ 11 1/4” and teammate Jada Ryan was 16th at 25’ 8”.
Hillsboro’s Peyton Bayless was 18th at 24’ 10”.
The District track meet continues Saturday at 10 a.m.
Miami Trace is in Division I in track and field and will compete at the Marietta District meet Thursday.
