Benefits set for two local youths

A silent auction, pork tenderloin dinner, and taco dinner will be held this Saturday to benefit two local youths battling leukemia.

Washington High School freshman Tristen Mider was recently diagnosed with Philadelphia Chromosome Leukemia.

Miami Trace Elementary second grader Gary Lewis was recently diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The community has been providing different avenues to help raise funds for both of the boys’ families as they undergo treatment.

Silent auction and pork tenderloin dinner

According to one of the event organizers, Amy Winters, the auction will take place both in-person and online. The auction will begin at noon and bids will close at 9 p.m.

Once the auction begins, items will be available to see in-person at the Eagle’s Lodge, 320 Sycamore St. in Washington Court House. The items will also be posted for bidding on the Facebook page, “Gary Lewis Benefit,” starting at noon.

Items for the auction are various. According to Winters, local community members and businesses have donated items. Some of those items are Ohio State tickets, Yeti coolers and a Traeger grill.

Items can still be donated to the auction but must be submitted by Thursday. To donate items, contact Winters at 740-463-8674 or [email protected], or contact Jaime McDaniel at 740-606-9073 or [email protected].

The pork tenderloin dinner will be available for purchase at the Eagle’s Lodge starting at 4 p.m. Dinners will remain available until the food runs out.

For $5, a plate will include a grilled pork tenderloin sandwich, baked beans and chips.

“This is not going to be the end,” said Winters. “We’re going to continue to do this. In the (mid-summer) we’re going to do a Poker Run, we’re going to do a golf outing. We did the chicken noodle dinner a couple weeks ago, we’re doing (the auction and dinner) Saturday. It’s not just going to be a one-and-done, we’re going to continue.”

Taco Dinner

The taco dinner is being hosted by the VFW Riders Post 3762. The taco dinner will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the VFW Riders Post, 335 Veterans Way in Washington C.H. The Post will be open to the public during the dinner.

Community members who want to take part in the dinner, but do not feel comfortable eating in, can order carryout. The number to call for carryout during the dinner is 614-736-0351.

The cost will be $5 for three tacos or a taco bowl.

VFW member Duke Hanscel is holding a special “Flaming Taco” challenge during the dinner. He will donate $20 to the cause for every person who successfully completes this challenge.

For the Flaming Taco challenge, three specially-made tacos must be consumed within five minutes (with no drinks).

According to Mary Doyle Messer, VFW Riders Post 3762 public affairs officer, “the VFW Riders Post 3762 is here for the community. Most of the riders have children—some grown, some still small, but we all have children. I have a little one in my house, and it hits too close to home. We really would appreciate it if the community came together to support two of our own.”
