Coach’s comments concerning leadership abilities
I have had the opportunity of having Blaise as a student, an athlete, an employee, and a friend. He has always been a hard worker in everything he has done. As mentioned earlier, you can see how active this young man is and has kept his GPA very close to 4.0 his entire HS career.. He has always tried to get better at everything he does. One example was when he ran and received the highest position at Boy’s State by his peers. This is why he is called The Governor by many. I coached Blaise in the game of tennis. This sport fits him so well since its called a Gentleman’s Sport. Tennis is one of those games where players are expected to conduct themselves with dignity and grace while on the court.
This is what Blaise does on the courts, and in his life on a daily basis. Anyone that knows him would speak of his high values, being polite, calm, and considerate to everyone he comes in contact with. It is tough to find someone like Blaise who not only gets the most out of his talent, but also assists others to do the same. He is a true leader in every facet of his life and will continue to lead people at everything he is involved with. This is why, I am nominating Blaise Tayese for the Christman Award. Blaise is the epitome of what I as a coach think of as the model Blue Lion student athlete. He’s selfless, determined, humble, hardworking and a WE first young man. I’ve known Blaise since he was in the 6th grade and a ball boy on one of my first varsity basketball teams. Even at that young age you could tell the young man was on the path to be great. Blaise has blossomed into a great leader of not only athletes, but the student body of Washington City Schools. He’s a young man that all parents can tell their young children to look as an example. He’s involved not only in his school and all aspects, but also the community. It doesn’t matter who you ask, students, staff, fans of Blue Lion sports, they will all have the same general sentiment when speaking about Blaise, “I love that kid”. What’s special about Blaise is that he’s had a phenomenal athletic career as a Blue Lion, but to me it’s not what stands out the most about the young man. What stands out the most is his genuinely true heart.
His compassion and kindness. His big smile and “Hey Coach B” every time I see him. His parents have instilled in him a tremendous foundation of values and principles to guide him through his life and they should be very proud. It’s with great privilege that I nominate Blaise Tayese for the Clarence A. Christman Award.

Blaise is the epitome of toughness and leadership. It was a blessing to coach him for his senior year. Blaise only missed one practice the entire season, and that was for a school function. He led the team in rebounding this season and started every game, but his on the court acumen paled in comparison with his toughness and leadership off the court. After the season we named a reoccurring award after him called “The Blaise Tayese Award for Toughness”. Blaise would be the perfect recipient of this award.

Blaise Tayese will go down as possibly the most valuable player I have coached in 17 seasons. One reason is quantifiable: 52 career goals and 21 assists. He was our leading scorer each of his 4 years. His hat trick his junior year at Miami Trace is legendary. He knows how to score goals. While scoring is important in soccer, he also is one of the most responsible, considerate, polite, and hard working athletes I’ve known. He has been a member of four very different Blue Lion soccer teams and has been a leader in each situation.
As a freshman, someone needed to step up and score for us, and he did. As a sophomore, he was the star player on a good team that won the sectional championship, and he scored against every opponent he faced in the regular season. His junior year was a disappointment for us in wins and losses, but he was the rock that challenged players when they needed it and was also positive when it was needed. Blaise’s senior season would be a difficult one with a young and inexperienced team. Blaise was an extra coach for us, bringing the young players along, showing them the sport, and not showing frustration. Any soccer coach would be thrilled to have a player that could either score like Blaise or lead like Blaise. He is excellent in both categories.
