Man sentenced in emaciated boxer case

A local man was sentenced in Washington Municipal Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to three counts of animal cruelty.

The charges were filed against James L. Miller Oct. 19 after Fayette Regional Humane Society (FRHS) agents saw an emaciated boxer confined in the backyard of a residence in the 1100 block of East Paint Street. On Wednesday, Miller was ordered not to own any animals for a period of five years, placed on probation for two years, received a 30-day suspended jail sentence, fined $457 in total court costs, and ordered to pay $340 in restitution to the FRHS for care and medical treatment.

According to FRHS, the dog, a 4-year-old male boxer, was underweight to the point where its ribs and hipbones were very prominent. Humane agents said the dog didn’t have access to water, and when offered water, he began drinking excessively for a long period of time.

Miller reportedly told FRHS agents that he noticed his dog began losing weight a week prior to their visit, but didn’t have time to take him to a veterinarian to be checked out.

FRHS Executive Director Dr. Lee Schrader, a veterinarian, examined the boxer after it was surrendered to humane agents. Schrader noted that the dog was severely infested with fleas, had bilateral ear infections, was anemic, and only weighed 46 pounds. A dog his size should be at a greater weight, according to the veterinary report.

The dog gained 11 pounds within a week under the care of FRHS.
