Lady Lion tennis tops Chillicothe, 3-2

The Washington Lady Blue Lion tennis team hosted the defending Frontier Athletic Conference co-champion Chillicothe Cavaliers Tuesday, Aug. 21 on the courts at Gardner Park.

Washington won the match, three courts to two.

At first singles, Washington’s Megan Downing defeated Natalie Drotleff, 6-4, 6-2.

At second singles, Jen Richards lost to Chillicothe’s Abbey Sims Clark, 1-6, 1-6.

Brooklyn Foose feat Ali Gossman at third singles, 6-3, 6-3.

Bethany Wilt and Sydnie Hall won the first doubles court for Washington, 6-2, 6-2 over Hannah Keesler and Heidi Arth.

At second doubles, Washington’s Brynne Frederick and Payton Maddox fell to Abby Pendell and Maddie Schafer, 5-7, 4-6.

“We knew going into this match that Chillicothe would be tough,” Washington head coach Samantha Leach said. “They are well coached and have a few girls who take lessons at the racquet club. They beat us twice last year.

“Beating the defending league champions was a huge accomplishment for our team,” Leach said. “I’m very proud of our girls and the work they have put in.

“We are excited to be off to such a great start.”

Washington’s next match is Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Hillsboro.
