Dave Bowling, 54, was traveling northbound on State Route 72 between Jamestown and Cedarville Tuesday morning when he lost control of his tractor-trailer and crashed.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. just past Federal Road in Cedarville Township. The tractor-trailer had to be towed from the scene. The contents of the trailer partially spilled into the ditch, including boxes of tortilla chips.
Bowling said he’s driven a tractor-trailer for 27 years and this is his first accident. He suffered minor injuries.
“I’m just sore,” said Bowling. He refused to be transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment of his minor injuries.
“I just ran off the road. Two cars were coming down the road so I squeezed over. It’s a skinny road. I stayed over to that side of the road. By the time I got up through here I realized I had run my tires off the road, then I tried to correct it and over-corrected it, and that’s what caused the accident,” said Bowling.
Bowling was on his way to I-70 and said he has been driving on State Route 72 a lot more lately.
“A lot of my co-drivers do, too, they travel this road a lot, too. It’s a shortcut coming from 35 going to I-70 for a lot of our deliveries,” said Bowling. “I’m going to start going back to using 35. (State route 72) is so narrow, when the cars are coming down through there, they drift a little bit, you got to get over a little bit. You get over by the berm, and all it takes is one of those wheels of ours to go off the road, and it pulls all of the others.”
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol there were no other vehicles involved in the crash. The Ohio Department of Transportation assisted with the clean-up.
