THE PLAINS — The Washington Blue Lions had their 2017 varsity baseball season come to an end with a 3-1 loss in the Division II District semifinals to the Marietta Tigers Monday, May 15.

The Blue Lions finish the season with a record of 16-13.

The next batter bunted, but popped the ball up for the first out.

The next batter struck out to end the game.

Jarett Patton pitched six innings for the Blue Lions. He allowed three hits and three runs (one earned) with two walks and four strikeouts.

“Jarett threw a spectacular game, again,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “He came back a day short on rest. He was super-efficient. He only threw 70 pitches in six innings. He pounded the zone and got some big outs. We had opportunities and that’s just baseball.

“They’re ranked fourth in the State and we played with them,” Rhodus said. “Sometimes, you come up just a little bit short. That’s baseball.

“Hat’s off to these guys,’ Rhodus said. “I’m super proud of them. My eight seniors, they grinded, every one of them. They got better and we finished the season winning seven of our last nine. We were playing our best baseball at the end of the year.

“After we lost to McClain, that was our fourth loss in the league and that was still early in the year,” Rhodus said. “The team could have said, you know, we’re going to coast through this and be done and they didn’t. They did the exact opposite. They said, you know what, we’re going to get better. We’re going to win games because we’re good and we’re going to compete. They did that and we got hot at the end. We won a Sectional title for the first time in four years. We had the number four team in the state on the ropes the entire game.

“It came down to a couple of plays, where, if we had executed, offensively, it might be a different outcome,” Rhodus said.

The Blue Lions say thank you and farewell to eight seniors: Conner Chrisman, Logan Jackson, Ethan Marting, Kyler Mount, Jarett Patton, Griffin Shaw, Avery Wilson and Brian Wilson.
