The Fayette County Life Squad/Fayette County EMS celebrates 40 years of service in 2016. To commemorate, an open house has been organized to honor all members who have served the Fayette County Life Squad/EMS over the past 40 years.

The event will be held this Saturday, Dec. 3 from 1-4 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 277 S. Main St. in Washington C.H. All members past and present are welcome to attend to reminisce, enjoy appetizers and celebrate four decades of care provided to others in their time of need.

The Fayette County Life Squad was formed as a Rotary Club project in 1976, introducing pre-hospital care to the residents of the community. The “Life Squad” began as a volunteer organization providing 24-hour service 365 days per year, and this continued for many years.

Sub-stations were soon added in the areas of Jeffersonville and New Holland, which still exist. Today, now known as the Fayette County EMS, the service is operated as a department of the Fayette County Memorial Hospital. A full-time, part-time, and PRN staff provides two 24-hour crews 365 days per year.

Originally, volunteers also provided dispatch for the organization. Shortly after implementation of 911 services in Fayette County, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office began dispatching the crews to emergency calls. Over the years there have been many changes within the organization, but one thing that has stayed constant is the dedication of the men and women that provide the service.

Since its inception in 1976, countless volunteers, paid EMTs and paramedics have given of themselves to answer the call regardless of time of day, weather conditions, or presenting dangers to provide pre-hospital care for the residents, visitors, and those passing through Fayette County and Perry Township of Pickaway County.
