A pair of Washington High School doubles teams concluded the 2016 tennis season earlier this month at the District tournament at Ohio University in Athens.
Maria Pickerill and Sierra Dawson went into Districts as the No. 4 overall seed out of eight.
Pickerill and Dawson played Bose and Incantro of Dover, the No. 2 seed from the East Sectional. The Dover duo won, 6-1, 6-2.
Bose and Incantro ended up losing to West Holmes in the semifinals.
Anna Nestor and Megan Downing were the No. 3 seed overall.
They played the No. 2 seed, Stubbe and Gottfried of Marietta.
Nestor and Downing lost in a tough three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6.
Marietta advanced to the semifinals before losing to Logan Elm.
West Holmes ended up winning the District finals against Logan Elm.
“Overall, we had an extremely successful and improving season,” Washington head coach Mitch Augenstein said. “We did not lose any varsity members last year, and we gained five amazing new freshmen players.
“We knew this was our season to lose, and we didn’t hardly let that happen,” Augenstein said. “We ended the 2016 season 15-3 overall, 9-3 in SCOL, where last year, in the 2015 season, we were 17-5 overall, 8-4 SCOL.”
Washington’s j-v tennis players went 3-8 overall last year. This year, the j-v players went 11-1.
“We are losing four amazing seniors this year,” Augenstein said. Washington seniors this year are: Ashton Carr, Sierra Dawson, Anna Nestor and Gretchen Milstead.
“But I know our team is in good hands with the amazing players coming up into the ranks.
“I am proud of my team, my girls, and my district for the support and effort they put into this team,” Augenstein said. “We are blessed with amazing facilities, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the parents and their support throughout the season.
“Our banquet will be held on Nov. 2nd, and we’ll rest, recuperate, and start fresh again in June of 2017,” Augenstein said.
