Washington Hi-Y to hold ‘Trick-or-Can’

The Washington High School Hi-Y club is participating in its annual “Trick-Or-Can” during Beggar’s Night on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Hi-Y is a community service-based club that encourages and empowers students to help out in their school and community, as well as helping their peers. The Hi-Y club takes joy in finding new ways and taking up new projects that turn into annual occurrences, which help to raise money or encourage students to give to others.

Some past events include Youth In Government, a project that betters the development of the American democratic process for students, which takes place every April; Homeless-For-A-Day, a day where students gather at Washington High School and set up cardboard “houses” to raise money from passersby, every May; and Trick-Or-Can every October.

Trick-Or-Can is a project in which members split up into different teams, and go around the community to collect canned food and nonperishable food items to give to the local food pantry. Beggar’s Night also enables the group participators to dress-up in costumes and get into the spirit of the holiday, while showing that helping others can be fun. The group even makes it a competition between the different teams, to see who can collect the most pounds of food by the end of the night.

Residents who would like to participate and donate to this project are encouraged to have canned goods and/or nonperishable food items ready when they are handing out candy. Hi-Y members will be sure to inform them that they are from the Washington Hi-Y club when they walk up to the door. Afterwards, all of the collected goods will then be taken to the Fayette County Food Pantry at the First Presbyterian Church, where they will be sorted, with help from the group, for people in need.

Help support Hi-Y and those in need by donating any canned food or nonperishable food items, and having them ready for a member to pick up. The club thanks the community for the continued support.
