Register to vote by this Tuesday


The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election is just a few days away.

“The last day to register to vote or update your voter address is Tuesday, October 11,” said Beth Ann Snyder, Fayette County Board of Elections director. “Our office will be open that day from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.”

Currently, there are over 16,000 registered voters in Fayette County.

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, absentee voting by mail and in-person early voting begins. Over 957,000 Ohioans have already requested an absentee ballot, according to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.

In Fayette County, approximately 1,300 absentee ballots will be mailed this Tuesday. “You can always call us and request an application for an absentee ballot, or download one off our website,” said Snyder.

Absentee ballot applications must be received by boards of elections by noon on Saturday, Nov. 5, but voters are encouraged to submit their request as soon as possible to ensure sufficient time to complete and return their ballot to the board of elections.

Completed absentee ballots must be postmarked by the day before the election and arrive at the board of elections within 10 days of Election Day in order to be counted. Ohio is only one of 12 states to allow late-arriving ballots to be counted.

If you have not mailed your ballot prior to election week, the Secretary of State’s Office recommends voters take their complete ballot to the post office and request it receive a postage cancellation marking, or return it personally to their county board of elections prior to the close of polls at 7:30 p.m.
