The Fayette County Retired Teachers Association has added to its annual scholarship fund for a local senior planning to become a teacher by offering a 50/50 drawing at three of this year’s six meetings. Winner of the October drawing was Jean Ann Davis. Secretary Bob Mowrey (center) is shown selling a ticket before lunch to Dick Glass; also pictured on the left are Davis, Maggie Glass and Pat Parsons.
Randy Overbeck, president-elect of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and a former administrator in the Miami Trace schools, gave an inspirational talk about heroes to the Fayette County Retired Teachers Association members attending the group’s October luncheon at Grace United Methodist Church. Overbeck promoted not only ORTA as one of the nation’s largest such organizations and well worth the $30 annual dues, but also the concept of teachers as worthy of high status: better everyday “heroes” than most of the sports, political and celebrity figures constantly in today’s news. Prior to his talk, Overbeck discussed his 2010 novel “Leave No Child Behind” with (from left) FCRTA President Norma Kirby and the outgoing director of ORTA District VI, Karen Butt.
