On a very nice Saturday morning, Oct. 1, the Washington Blue Lions hosted a cross country invitational at the home of Tim Walters south of Washington C.H.
The meet had a distinct SCOL feel with six of the eight member schools taking part.
Only Hillsboro and Wilmington were not on hand.
The Miami Trace High School boys won the team meet, totalling 45 placement points.
Panther senior Blake Pittser won the race in a time of 17:16.02. There were 79 runners competing.
Washington’s Kameron Morris was the first Blue Lion to finish the race. He placed 12th in 19:23.48.
Cannon Woolridge of McClain finished 10th in 19:05.25.
In the high school girls race, Washington junior Maddy Garrison won with a time of 19:48.59. She was the only one of the 51 contestants to finish in under 20 minutes.
The Washington girls team was second with 52 placement points.
Chillicothe won the meet with 24 points. The Lady Cavaliers had six runners finish in the top 10.
Miami Trace’s Saylor Preston was the first runner for her team to finish. She placed 21st in 25:20.83.
McClain’s Jamie Discher was 47th in 32:10.39.
“I was proud of the team,” Miami Trace coach Jeff Smallwood said. “Blake was the individual winner. Nick Foody ran an excellent race. He was our No. 2 today.
“Simon and Henry DeBruin were third and fourth for us today,” Smallwood said. “Those boys are freshmen. Cole Enochs was our No. 5 today. He is also a freshman.
“We’ve built something here,” Smallwood said. “It’s taken a lot of work. We’ve won two invitationals, back-to-back. We’re going to Jonathan Alder Saturday and we hope to make it a third. We’re running at the Ray Russell (meet).
“The four girls we had here today are all freshmen,” Smallwood said. “We usually have seven, but, today, three of the girls had appointments today. We have seven freshmen girls running.
“I would like to thank Tim Walters, my high school coach,” Smallwood said. “He puts on a great meet. Also, coach Ryan Day, he was my high school cross country coach, just to make him feel a little old; they put on a great meet today.”
“We had a much better weather day than we had last year,” Washington coach Ryan Day said. “It was like 41 degrees last year. Aside from all of the mud from the two-plus inches of rain this week, it was a great day.
“Maddy looked very strong today,” Day said. “She’s had a great season so far. I think she’s won five of the six races she’s been in.
“It sure is fun to have a home meet,” Day said. “This allows our kids to have more support than they would normally. Tim Walters does a great job getting this meet ready.
“We hope to make it even bigger next year with a few more teams,” Day said.
“Our boys looked strong,” Day said. “I haven’t seen the results yet, but Kameron (Morris) was our No. 1 and Josh (Trimmer) was second for us. We had our boys packed up a little closer today, from first place to last. That’s good to see.”
Washington will take part in the Unioto Invitational Saturday.
