WMS language arts students celebrate ’60s Day’

This year, Sept. 22 was 60s day at Washington Middle School for the eighth grade students. Students enjoyed 60s-themed activities, including a hula-hoop contest and music from this decade.

Students and staff dressed as characters from the eighth grade class novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The highlight of this annual event is the private classic car show brought to the school by the Dragin’ Angels car club. This year other car owners participated as well. The students were permitted to get inside and have pictures taken with these classic cars and trucks. The kids were able to interact with the owners to learn about the time periods represented by each of the displayed cars and trucks. This real life application of the story elements is a huge hit every year.

One student said, “This was the greatest day of my life.” As the engines revved, music played, and the horns blared, students were transported back to this decade as they immersed themselves into the world of the fictional characters being studied. For many students, this is the first time they found themselves connecting with literature.

The eighth grade language arts team expressed their gratitude for all of the support shown for this event. They shared that the members of the car club have always been so generous with their time and are always so willing to share their hobby with our students. This car club helps bring the novel to life for the kids. Without the club’s involvement, this event couldn’t happen.

Mrs. Hesson explained that this event holds a special place in her heart. “My dad, Gary Long, was a member of the car club and helped start this event several years ago. I am grateful to him for making this happen. I am also grateful to the great men and women that have continued to make this event possible since then.”

The eighth grade language arts staff is comprised of Derrick Lyons, Amy Fredrick, Sally Smith, and Lisa Hesson. They plan to continue this event next year.
