Wilmington officially joins SBAAC

With a 4-0 vote of the Wilmington City Schools board of education, Hurricane student-athletes will compete in the Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference beginning in the fall of 2017.

With Larry Roberts II absent from the Monday night meeting held at the Rodger O. Borror Middle School, the unanimous vote will give Wilmington dual membership in both the SBAAC and the South Central Ohio League.

The move puts all four Clinton County schools in the same league for the first time.

Recently, Clinton-Massie and East Clinton accepted the invitation of the SBAAC to join the league following the 2016-17 sports season.

Blanchester is currently a member of the SBAAC.

Other full-time members are Amelia, Batavia, Bethel-Tate, Clermont Northeastern, Felicity-Franklin, Georgetown, Goshen, New Richmond, Norwood, Western Brown and Williamsburg. Fayetteville is a member of the SBAAC for football only but remains a member of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference in all other sports.

Following the 2016-17 school year, Amelia and Norwood will leave the SBAAC.

Wilmington, Clinton-Massie and East Clinton are members of the South Central Ohio League. Five current SCOL schools — Chillicothe, Hillsboro, McClain, Miami Trace and Washington — will leave the league following the 2016-17 season.

The divisional makeup of the SBAAC for 2017-18 will be:

• American Division (big schools): Wilmington, Clinton-Massie, Western Brown, New Richmond, Goshen, Batavia.

• National Division (small schools): East Clinton, Blanchester, Clermont Northeastern, Bethel-Tate, Williamsburg, Felicity-Franklin, Georgetown.

Felicity and Georgetown do not have varsity football, Fayetteville would be the sixth member of the National Division for football only.
