The Dr. Robert Heiny Community Service Award was presented at the Fayette County Board of Developmental Disability’s (DD) recent board meeting. In recognition of the life-long commitment of Dr. Robert Heiny to the field of developmental disabilities, the Fayette County Board of DD decided to begin an annual recognition to honor Dr. Heiny’s work. It is with great pleasure that the first recipient of this award is Dr. Heiny himself, said Board of DD officials.
Dr. Heiny was a member of the “founding families” when the DD Board came into existence in 1967. As an original board member, he served 12 years on the board, many of those as board chair.
As a parent of a child with special needs, Dr. Heiny had a unique perspective on challenges being faced by children with developmental disabilities. Dr. Heiny was influential in developing therapies, such as speech, occupational therapy and physical development modalities. In addition, Dr. Heiny along with other founding family members, helped to develop the adult service program we know today as Fayette Progressive Industries (FPI).
As a practicing physician in the community, Dr. Heiny was well regarded as a community leader and much sought after to serve on community boards. The Fayette County Board of DD has been lucky to know Dr. Heiny, has benefited from his life-long commitment and now will be honored to acknowledge an annual recipient of this award in his name.
Congratulations to Dr. Heiny and to those who will follow in his footsteps. Fayette County is truly blessed to have people like Dr. Heiny living, working and volunteering their time and talents to support people with disabilities. As the great Vince Lombardi said, “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Thank you, Robert Heiny for your part in making the Fayette County DD team a success.
