Miami Trace’s first doubles team of Bethany Reiterman and Haylee Higgins entered the District tennis tournament with the fifth seed.

Their first match was against the first seeded Southeast Sectional team from Logan Elm of Jessica Dillard and Shelby Ward.

It was not unusual for the Miami Trace duo to get off to a bit of a slow start, according to head coach Kim Schirtzinger said.

Reiterman and Higgins trailed 1-4, but began to push themselves as the match unfolded, Schirtzinger said.

“The girls really began to play well and were able to even the set,” Schirtzinger said.

In the end, Reiterman and Higgins lost the first set, 4-6.

“The next set we were able to give them a run for their money and pulled it out with a tie breaker for a 7-6 win,” Schirtzinger explained.

In the third set, Logan Elm jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Reiterman and Higgins once again began a comeback, tying the deciding set, 4-4.

Logan Elm was able to win the next two games to take the match with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6.

“I was very excited that we made it to Districts this year,” Schirtzinger said. “It was a great opportunity for these two seniors to be able to play so well together.

“They have pushed themselves and have given their all to get themselves this far. I am very proud of them and all of my team members that have pushed themselves to get better this year.”
