The Panther Pit was rocking Thursday night for the second match of the season featuring the Washington Lady Blue Lions against Miami Trace in varsity volleyball.

A large crowd and a large, vocal student-section added to the exciting atmosphere of this rivalry match.

Miami Trace won the match at Washington High School back on Sept. 15, 26-24, 25-17 and 25-19.

Thursday, Washington evened the season series with a 3-0 win. Scores of the games were: 25-21, 25-17 and 25-20.

It was senior night at Miami Trace and the Lady Panthers recognized their six seniors: Kelsey Wolfe, Hannah Casto, Brittany Warnock, Sara Rowland, Carleigh Fraley and Megan Self.

Miami Trace also recognized Washington’s seniors: Jaycie McRoberts, Megan Mullins, Maria Wilson and Brooklyn Wilson.

Washington finishes the SCOL portion of its season with a fine record of 12-2.

Chillicothe clinched at least a tie for the SCOL Thursday with a 3-0 win over Wilmington to improve to 12-1.

“We knew tonight that it was going to be a mind game,” Washington head coach Ashley DeAtley said. “The mentality of being able to deal with a loud gymnasium and large student section. Previously, we haven’t seen that a lot.

“When we have seen that, it’s kind of messed with us a little bit,” DeAtley said. “We tried to work on it by giving the girls main focus points, knowing it was going to be a big game like it was.

“We were kind of hit and miss with our serving,” DeAtley said. “I think our defense and our attacks were on point tonight. Maria (Wilson) did a nice job on the right side of making sure the ball was put on the floor.

“We used our middles to set up our offense,” DeAtley said. “That’s what we’ve been preaching to the girls and they did a real nice job of being able to execute that tonight.”

“Washington definitely played really, really well,” Miami Trace head coach Doug Mace said. “Every part of the game they played well. There weren’t too many openings for us. We had a few good moments, we just couldn’t string enough of them together and we just weren’t consistent enough tonight to compete at that level.

“We hung in there and fought with them and I’m proud of the girls for that,” Mace said. “It was a big, emotional night. It’s great for both schools to have games like that with lots of students here. That’s why you play high school sports.

“Wins and losses are one thing, but, I think the memories, when you look back on it, the kids from both teams will have memories of nights like tonight,” Mace said. “Court House just played really, really well. We hung in there and made it challenging for them.”

Washington is finished for the regular season. The tournament seedings will be announced Sunday.
