It was a very successful week of play in the South Central Ohio League for the 11-time defending league champion Washington Lady Blue Lion volleyball team.
On Tuesday, Sept. 8, Washington hosted Wilmington and came away with a 3-0 win.
Scores of the games were: 25-7, 25-19 and 25-11.
For Washington, Victoria Jones led servers with 10 aces, followed by Maria Wilson and Megan Mullins, both having five aces.
Jaycie McRoberts led hitters for Washington.
Faith Kobel had three kills, and Megan Mullins and Maria Wilson both with two kills.
Madalyn Wayne led the Washington defense with eight digs. Brooklyn Wilson had seven digs and Susana Eckstein had six digs.
“We were able to get in the groove a little more and use some more people on the court,” Washington head coach Ashley DeAtley said. “The girls came out focused and needed to keep that focus the whole match. We battled, playing at a consistent level which is the hardest for us to do right now.”
On Thursday, Washington visited Greenfield to take on the McClain Lady Tigers.
Washington won this match, 3-1.
Washington won the first game, but McClain leveled the match, 1-1.
The Lady Lions won the final two games to take the match.
Scores of the games were: 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-21 for an average of just over four points per game differential.
Megan Mullins led all servers with four aces followed by Jaycie McRoberts with two aces.
Victoria Jones and Hannah Haithcock each had opne ace serve.
McRoberts led the offense with a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs.
Jones had 12 kills with Faith Kobel and Megan Mullins following with seven each.
“We had a couple of girls with double digits defensive digs for us,” DeAtley said.
Haley Maxie led with 19 digs, Madalyn Wayne had 18 digs, McRoberts had 16 digs, Delanie Greer had 11 digs and Maria Wilson had 10 digs.
Mullins had 25 assists.
“Tonight we saw a Greenfield team that we were not used to seeing,” DeAtley said. “They were scrappy and they kept the ball off the floor. We were stuck in slow motion the first half of the first set and then when some calls were against us, we began to see some people step up and take charge.
“Madalyn Wayne and Haley Maxie covered the floor really well tonight,” DeAtley said. “Madalyn was able to step right in and do a great job at keeping things off the floor for us in the middle where we were getting beat before.
“Haley Maxie was very vocal, which helped the girls know she was in the action,” DeAtley said. “We used Jaycie a lot tonight because she was on her hitting game. She found the open spots on the floor and was aggressive.
“Delaney Greer was another hitter that was on and did a nice job of finding holes to hit in,” DeAtley said. “With Homecoming being this weekend it’s hard to contain that excitement and keep them reigned in and focused, but they came together and mentally got through a game leaning on each other and using each others’ advantages to pull out the win.”
Washington is back in action with the Volley For the Cure match against Miami Trace Tuesday. The reserve game starts at 5 p.m.
