The Miami Trace Panthers hosted the Logan Elm Braves on a wet Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Trace High School with the Braves claiming victory, 48-14.
During the pre-game, the announcer asked the crowd to join in a moment of silence for the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center towers.
The first quarter of the game began with several big drives by the Logan Elm Braves.
The Braves’ Jakob Sheumaker brought the first touchdown of the game with 7:59 left and their kicker, Bowen Boldoser, scored the extra point. The Miami Trace defense stood strong against their opponent, but could not stop a 39-yard pass to Logan Elm’s Stephen Saxton. The pass led to the second touchdown for the Braves by Marcus Paul a moment later at the 5:54 mark. The extra point was good leaving the score for the first quarter at 14-0.
The second quarter opened with a score by Logan Elm’s Saxton at 10:28 with Boldoser kicking in the extra point. The teams exchanged possessions until Saxton received a 40-yard pass and put another touchdown on the scoreboard for Logan Elm with Boldoser earning another point.
Just before the end of the first half, Miami Trace’s Larry Jackson scored a touchdown with only 17.9 seconds to go and the Panthers’ kicker Blake Pittser added his own point with a successful extra point.
When the Braves received the ball Saxton fielded and returned it for 90-yards and another touchdown. The extra point was no good. The score at halftime: Logan Elm 34, Miami Trace 7.
The third quarter began and no points would be put on the board until the 2:09 mark when Sheumaker would drive in another touchdown for Logan Elm. The extra point was made by Boldoser making the score 41-7.
As the game progressed into the fourth quarter, Miami Trace would score their second touchdown as a drive, beginning in the end of the third quarter with Noah Wiseman returning the ball for 35-yards, brought the Panther’s Jackson in for another touchdown. The extra point by Pittser brought the score to 41-14.
Nearing the end of the game, the Panther’s could not quite find a grip on the wet field and the Braves’ Terry Willison scored one last touchdown with 54.5 seconds left and the extra point was good by Boldoser. The final score of the game 48-14 for the Logan Elm victory.
“Logan Elm has a real nice ball club and we wish them well the rest of the season,” Miami Trace head coach Steve Bartlett said. “The main thing to take away from tonight is that we still have a lot of work to do and more games to play.”
“I was really impressed with the way our kids came out, which is something we have been working on after a couple slow starts,” Logan Elm head coach Terry Holbert said. “I told our guys we were great in spurts, but we have got to sustain. We need to reach a high level of consistency.”
Miami Trace, now 0-3, opens SCOL play at Clinton-Massie next week.
Logan Elm opens Mid-State League play next Friday at Fairfield Union at 7:30 p.m.
Miami Trace’s j-v team takes on the Washington Blue Lions today at 10 a.m. at Gardner Park.
