Wilmington soccer beats Blue Lions, 6-2

On a hot, muggy Tuesday, the day after Labor Day, the Washington Blue Lion soccer team resumed play with a home game against Wilmington.

The Hurricane won this SCOL match-up, 6-2.

Wilmington jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the first five minutes of play.

Approximately one minute after Wilmington’s second goal, Washington freshman Blaise Tayese scored on a penalty kick to halve the margin.

Wilmington scored two additional goals to take a 4-1 lead into the halftime break.

Washington made it a 4-2 game when Tayese scored in the second half. The assist went to Kenny Upthegrove.

“They’re a good team,” Washington head coach Aaron Teter said of Wilmington. “They’re smallish, but, they are really quick and really skilled.

“We played a little bit slow and tired in the first half,” Teter said. “We played with a lot of heart and pride in the second half. It was just a 2-1 difference in the second half.”

Washington used two goal-keepers on this evening. Brian Wilson had seven saves playing roughly three-quarters of the game.

“Brian twice broke up a play in the first half,” Teter said. “There was no save, just important plays.”

Eli Ruth finished the game in goal for Washington, collecting four saves.

Washington (now 2-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the SCOL) will play at McClain High School in Greenfield Thursday at 5 p.m.
