The cadets of Southern State Community College’s Basic Peace Officers Training Program were recognized at a special ceremony held Aug. 13 at the college’s Fayette Campus in Washington Court House.

“I am proud of the perseverance shown by these cadets,” said Dr. Kevin Boys, SSCC President, as he addressed the audience in attendance. “It’s a difficult time right now to be a police officer. In a split second you may have to make a decision to use your weapon; it may take a life, or it may save a life. This training, and your continued education, will equip you to make that decision in the best way possible. We thank you for your service and your chosen career path.”

Eight cadets were recognized for completing the seven-month program which covers the fundamentals of entry-level peace officer training and includes instruction in laws, administrative functions, firearms, human relations, criminal investigations, traffic accident investigations, traffic enforcement, patrols, civil disorders and prisoner bookings.

Students who completed the training program include Wesley A. Anderson of Sabina, Michael B. Ford of Wilmington, Ron R. Martin Jr. of Hillsboro, Jeremy A. Moore of Washington C.H., Nathan A. Rahmlow of Washington C.H., Renee D. Stanley of Leesburg, Brandon Young of Hillsboro, and Steven N. Zitney Wilmington.

Commander Robin A. Roche presented the Basic Peace Officer Training Academy awards. Perfect attendance awards were presented to Renee Stanley and Brandon Young. An award for outstanding academic performance and the leadership award were both presented to Jeremy A. Moore.

In recognition of outstanding psychological survival fortitude, Ron R. Martin Jr. was presented the Fighting Spirit Award, in memory of Sgt. Tim Fryer.

In recognition of outstanding handgun performance, Michael B. Ford was presented the Top Gun Award, in memory of Deputy Harry Smithson.

In recognition of maintaining outstanding physical condition, Steven Zitney was presented the Physical Fitness Award, in memory of Davide A. Soprano.

Most coursework for the training program takes place at Southern State’s Fayette Campus in Washington C.H. Instructors are recruited from various state, county and local law enforcement and corrections agencies. In concert with the Basic Peace Officers Training Program, Southern State also offers associate degrees in Assets Protection & Loss Prevention, Criminal Justice, and Law Enforcement.
