‘All Aboard’

The Fayette County Museum trustees say they agree that this season has been most successful. The focus has been on Fayette County scouts, Fayette County veterans, the American flag, and the display at the recent Fayette County Fair was very well-attended.

As the final exhibit for the summer months, the trustees thought a look back to when trains were the king of transportation in Fayette County would be quite an attraction. As you visit the Museum in August, you will find many forms of memorabilia: pictures, books, a map depicting all the stations in the county and another showing all the stations in Ohio in 1899, and a 1903 advertisement for an excursion from Lancaster to Cincinnati.

One of the more interesting trains that used to run in Fayette County is the “grasshopper railroad.” There were only 14 miles of its track in Fayette County. Wesley Pierce, from Mt. Sterling, will be the guest speaker at the Museum on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. Pierce is an expert on the grasshopper railroad: why it is so named, where it travelled and what its purpose was. This is a must event if you are interested in historic trains.

The Fayette County Museum is owned by the Fayette County Historical Society and managed by a volunteer board of trustees. It is a non-profit organization. There is no fee to tour the Museum, but donations are always welcome.

The hours of operation are Saturday and Sundays, 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. If you have questions regarding the August exhibit or about the Museum, please call 740-335-2953 and leave a message. A trustee will return your call.
