Fayette/Madison County OPERI meets

Approximately 50 people attended the Fayette/Madison County Ohio Public Employee Retiree Systems bimonthly meeting at the Fayette County Commission on Aging on July 22. President Sylvia Hildreth called the meeting to order and all stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.

The speaker for the meeting was Sylvia Watson, certified senior advisor, CSA, and regional account manager with MediGold Insurance. The subject of the talk concerned the Medicare Connector program which begins in October. Watson educated the group on what Medicare is exactly and what the difference between an original Medicare supplement and a Medicare Advantage plan is. One interesting fact about Medicare is that as hard as President Harry Truman worked unsuccessfully to procure insurance for seniors, when Lyndon Johnson managed to pass it through congress in 1965, President Truman was the first recipient of Medicare.

Sylvia called the business part of the meeting to order. Jeanne Immell gave the secretary’s report. Marilee Peterson gave the treasurer’s report. We have 35 members currently. Both reports were approved as read.

Sylvia Hildreth gave the president’s report. There are meetings all over the state to help members get ready for the Connector process through OneExchange. There are two days, Aug. 19 and 20, in Chillicothe. There was much discussion concerning the fact that OPERI members are able to call OneExchange Connector at 1-844-287-9945, OPERS at 1-800-222-7377 or register on line at www.medicare.oneexchange.com/opers to get your call date with the Connector.

OPERS approved additional deposits for retirees selecting a plan through the Connector in order to ease the transition and offset any out of pocket costs. The Health Reimbursement Arrangement deposit will be made once annually for three years.

The meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23. The speaker will be Shane Olson from Humana. It will be held in the COA craft room.
