Panther baseball beats McClain, 6-5

GREENFIELD — The Miami Trace varsity baseball team played its penultimate SCOL game Thursday, a make-up game at Greenfield’s Mitchell Park against the McClain Tigers.

Miami Trace won this game, 6-5.

Darby Tyree was the winning pitcher for the Panthers.

He worked five innings with four strikeouts, seven walks, four hits and five runs (three earned).

Skylar McDonald got the save for Miami Trace. He pitched two innings with one strikeout, one walk and one base hit.

Randall Mischal pitched for McClain.

“Darby pitched well, other than he got a little uncharacteristically wild,” Miami Trace head coach Rob Smith said. “He pitched a good game overall. They only had four hits off him.

“This was a good league win,” Smith said. “This gives us a chance to finish third in the league. We were happy to get out of there with the win.”

In the first inning for Miami Trace, Josh Morton singled and later scored on a single by Mitchell Creamer.

The Tigers tied the game with a run in the bottom half of the first.

Booth reached on an error and stole second. He scored on a single by Beatty.

After a scoreless second inning, the Panthers put three on the board in the third.

Trenton Harris singled and stole second. A single by Morton drove in Harris.

Morton scored second and Brady Wallace drew a walk.

Creamer singled, scoring Morton and Wallace.

The Panthers tacked on a run in the fourth inning.

Drew Stevens led off with a double. Harris singled, scoring Stevens to make it 5-1.

McClain got that run back with one in the bottom of the fourth.

Smith singled for McClain and later scored on an error.

The Panthers scored what proved to be their final run of the game in the fifth.

Wallace drew a walk and stole second and scored on a ground out by Stevens.

McClain made it interesting by scoring three times in the sixth.

Booth walked and Easter hit a single. Mischal followed with a single that scored Booth.

Beatty was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

The Panthers turned a double play, with Easter scoring to make it 6-4.

The Tigers pushed one more run across to make it 6-5.

The Panthers will host the Washington Blue Lions in the Sectional tournament Thursday at 5 p.m.

The winner of that game advances to the District tournament in Athens where they could play either Jackson, Athens or Chillicothe on Monday, May 16.
