Clinton-Massie softball stays perfect

On an overcast, breezy and cool first Monday of May, the Miami Trace Lady Panthers hosted Clinton-Massie in an SCOL softball match-up.

It was Senior Day and Miami Trace recognized three seniors from Clinton-Massie and then their five seniors: Whitney Cockerill, Emylee Grooms, Harmonee Napier, Alexis Schwartz and Megan Self.

The Lady Panthers were looking for another close game against the SCOL champion and undefeated Massie Falcons team. Last week, Miami Trace was in the lead, but lost at Massie, 3-2.

Monday, the fates weren’t as kind to Miami Trace.

The Lady Panthers did score first, plating two runs in the second inning.

However, the Falcons responded with nine runs in the third on their way to a 12-3 win. Massie is now 19-0 overall, 13-0 in the SCOL.

Taylor Florea went the distance in notching her 13th win of the season for the Falcons. She allowed five hits and three runs (all earned) with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Maddie Mossbarger started and took the loss for Miami Trace. She pitched three innings with nine runs (eight earned), 10 hits, one walk and no strikeouts.

Olivia Wolffe pitched four innings for Miami Trace, with three runs (all earned), four hits, no walks and no strikeouts.

For Miami Trace, Harmonee Napier went 2 for 3.

Brooke Henry hit her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot over the right-center field fence in the fourth inning.

Miami Trace (12-9 overall, 9-4 in the SCOL) posted two runs in the bottom of the second.

The Lady Panthers began the second inning with the first two batters being retired.

Henry walked and moved to second on a passed ball.

Jessica Camp had a base hit, with Henry moving to third.

Henry scored on another passed ball and Cassidy Lovett, who came in to run for Camp, also scored on a passed ball.

The Falcons sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring nine runs on eight hits.

“That took the wind out of our sails right there,” Miami Trace head coach Terry Smith said. “The girls knew (Massie) was a good team. They knew we had our shot at them last Wednesday and kind of let it slip by. The girls were looking forward to the challenge. Things just didn’t pan out tonight.

“The seniors have always come ready to play,” Smith said. “They are a good bunch of girls. I think all five are going on to college. We had a nice crowd on hand to see the seniors play. I’m sure they will continue to put forth the effort the rest of the season. Hopefully we can win a few more ballgames. We will miss them.”

Miami Trace is at Greenfield Thursday to complete league play with a game against Mitchell Park against McClain.

Also in the SCOL Monday, Washington defeated McClain in the completion of a suspended game, 7-2.

Miami Trace will host Washington in the opening round of the Sectional tournament Wednesday, May 11 at 5 p.m.

Offensively for Miami Trace: Whitney Cockerill, 0-4; Ashley Campbell, 1-4; Megan Self, 0-3; Alexis Schwartz, 0-3; Taylor Barrett, 0-3; Brooke Henry, 1-2, 2 runs, 1 rbi, 1 home run (No. 4), 1 bb; Jessica Camp, 1-3; Harmonee Napier, 2-3; Emylee Grooms, 0-1, hbp; Cassidy Lovett, courtesy runner, 1 run.
