The Miami Trace Panthers hosted the Washington Blue Lions in a varsity baseball match-up Friday afternoon.

Played in front of a large crowd of family and friends, the Panthers came out on top, 6-3.

Darby Tyree started and got the win for the Panthers on the mound.

The lanky lefty threw six innings with six hits and three runs (one earned). He walked three and struck out four.

Trenton Harris came on in the seventh and got the save for Miami Trace. He pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one base hit.

For the Blue Lions, Jordan Flowers started and pitched five innings, absorbing the loss. He yielded eight hits and six runs (all earned) with two walks and three strikeouts.

Aaron Greer pitched one inning for Washington, with one strikeout.

Washington struck for one run in the top of the first.

The Panthers responded with two runs in the bottom of the first.

From there, the game progressed through the second and third innings with neither team being able to dent the plate.

The Blue Lions forged ahead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning.

The Panthers quickly countered with a single run in their half of the fourth inning, tying the game, 3-3.

The Panthers broke the tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and made that stand up for the 6-3 final score.

Offensively, the Panthers were led by Skylar McDonald, who went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs driven in and scoring one.

Drew Stevens went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs.

Brady Wallace had a hit and scored two runs for the Panthers.

Josh Morton went 1 for 2 and scored twice.

Mitchell Creamer had a hit and scored a run.

For the Blue Lions, Brian Wilson went 3 for 4 with one rbi. One of his hits was a double.

Caden Cluxton, at the top of the Blue Lions’ order, went 2 for 3 with one run and three stolen bases.

Cole Massie had a hit and Tim Robinson had a hit and scored for Washington.

Hayden Hufford also scored for the Blue Lions.

“It was a good baseball game,” Miami Trace head coach Rob Smith said. “It was almost like a tournament game. Which, every time we play, it has been like that; since Tyler (Rhodus) and I have been coaching (both have been at their respective posts for three years now).

“They’ve all been close,” Smith added. “All great ball games. We finally got the monkey off our back tonight, because we had lost four straight to them. We beat them my first time against them and then lost four straight. And, they’ve all been close games.

“It was a big win for us,” Smith continued. “Jordan Flowers pitched a good game for them. Darby pitched a whale of a game for us. Trenton Harris came in and got the save pitching the seventh.

“We made some mistakes early,” Smith said. “We were fortunate that Court House didn’t turn them into great big innings.”

“Both teams played really well,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “Darby Tyree pitched a really good game for them.

“I thought my guys played really well,” Rhodus added. “They hit the ball hard all night, just too often it was right at them.

“We made the defensive plays all night, too,” Rhodus said. “I felt like the difference today was timely hitting and Trace had two key hits that scored three or four of their runs.”

The Blue Lions (11-9 overall, 7-7 in the SCOL) will play at Blanchester Tuesday.

Miami Trace (12-6 overall, 7-5 in the SCOL) hosts Clinton-Massie Monday. The Panthers also have a make-up game at Greenfield against the McClain Tigers Thursday to wrap up league play.
