Panthers baseball edges Cavs, 5-4

CHILLICOTHE — The Miami Trace Panthers visited Chillicothe Friday to take on the Cavaliers in an SCOL baseball match-up.

The Panthers held off a late rally by the Cavs to post a 5-4 victory.

Miami Trace is now 6-2 overall, 4-2 in the SCOL.

Trenton Harris got the win for the Panthers. He pitched six innings, with three runs and four strikeouts.

Trevon Burnside got the save with one inning in relief and two strikeouts.

The Panthers scored one run in the first and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

The Cavaliers put a run on the board in the third inning.

Miami Trace had single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-1 lead.

Chillicothe scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Offensively, Harris went 3 for 3 with a double, Josh Morton had a pair of hits and scored a run and Mitchell Creamer was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

The Panthers had a season-high 10 stolen bases in the game.

“We played a solid ball game,” Miami Trace head coach Rob Smith said. “We still had some miscues at the wrong time that allowed Chillicothe to hang around.

“I like the way we’re playing,” Smith said. “Other than a couple of innings here and there, we’ve been playing good baseball. We’re getting better and better. A couple of breaks and we score a lot more runs tonight.

“Chillicothe played solid defense,” Smith said. “They’ve been in a lot of games lately. We thought it was a good win on the road.”

Miami Trace will play at the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe Saturday in a doubleheader against Waterford. The first game is now set for 5:30 p.m. with the second game to follow around 8 p.m.
