The Miami Trace Lady Panthers had to rally from behind when they hosted the Fairland Dragons from Proctorville, Ohio Saturday afternoon.

When all was said and done, it took two overtime periods (four minutes each), or a total of five full quarters of basketball to decide the issue.

The Lady Panthers outscored Fairland, 7-2 in the second overtime to post a 68-63 win.

Miami Trace had three players in double figures, led by senior Shay McDonald with 18 points.

Freshman Hillery Jacobs scored 13 points (including three three-point field goals) and junior Delaney Eakins scored 10 points.

Sophomores Emma Pitstick and Libby Aleshire each had eight points and junior Magarah Bloom scored seven.

Bloom led the Lady Panthers with nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

McDonald had seven rebounds and Eakins had five rebounds.

Aleshire and Jacobs each had four rebounds.

Miami Trace had 35 rebounds, 14 of those on the offensive end.

Fairland had seven offensive rebounds.

The Dragons were led freshman Tomi Hinkle with 20 points.

Senior Jenna Stone scored 14 and junior Emma Marshall had 10 points.

Just how was Miami Trace able to rally and win this game?

“I wish we could point to one thing,” Miami Trace head coach Ben Ackley said. “We really were not sure what to do. We tried several things and nothing seemed to be working.

“They are really good at running their man offense,” Ackley said. “They’re a great screening team, they’re very unselfish.”

Ackley spoke about freshman Hillery ‘Bean’ Jacobs.

“She’s really had a great week or two of practice,” Ackley said. “She’s really starting to come into her own. She’s having confidence shooting the ball. She missed her first couple of looks today and we emphasized to our kids to keep shooting and play with confidence. Luckily, she did that today and man, did she make some big shots late.

“Our kids really stepped up and made some gritty plays,” Ackley said. “Just enough to get by. A lot of our kids have been asked to step up and do things that they’re probably not ready to do yet. We’re making them learn on the job. They’re getting more comfortable because we’re 11 games in. We’re asking the kids to think a lot more than they ever have and do that at a higher level.”

Fairland led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and 31-22 at the half.

Miami Trace trailed thrice by as many as 11 points. At the end of the third, the Lady Panthers were within seven, at 40-33.

Seven was the magic number and just happened to be the amount by which Miami Trace outscored Fairland in the fourth quarter to send the game into what would end up being two overtime periods.

Miami Trace pulled to within four points early in the fourth.

However, Fairland went on a 6-0 run to go in front, 52-41 with 3:30 to play in the game.

Miami Trace began a 9-1 run to pull to within three points (53-50) with 57 seconds remaining in regulation.

After a converted free throw by Fairland, McDonald scored to make it a two-point game with 24 seconds to play.

After another free throw by the Dragons, Jacobs hit a three-point shot to tie the game, 55-55.

Both teams scored six points in the first overtime.

Jacobs hit a three, Bloom hit one free throw and McDonald made two shots from the line.

Fairland scored with 10 seconds to play, setting the stage for a second overtime.

Jacobs made a pair of free throws and Pitstick scored to make it 65-61.

Aubrey McCoy hit one free throw and Fairland scored to put the margin at 66-63.

McDonald twice went to the line in the final minute, hitting two of four free throw, while Fairland did not score again to put the final at 68-63.

Miami Trace (7-4 overall) will return to play Saturday at Jackson with the j-v game first at noon.
