Panthers beat Indians, 68-59

On a snowy, cold night in Fayette County, the Miami Trace Panthers welcomed the Indians of Hillsboro High School for an SCOL make-up game at the Panther Pit Friday.

Miami Trace won this contest, 68-59 to finish the 2015-16 regular season with a record of 14-8.

The Panthers finish the SCOL schedule at 9-5, placing them fourth by themselves in the league.

Hillsboro falls to 7-14 overall and finishes 4-10 in the SCOL, tied with Clinton-Massie for fifth place in the league.

Junior Blake Pittser was the game’s leading scorer for Miami Trace with 22 points.

Junior DeAndre Pettiford had 16 points and led the team with seven rebounds.

Sophomore Darby Tyree scored 11 for the Panthers and had six rebounds.

For the Indians, Logan Kibler led with 19 points.

Phillip Mycroft scored 13 and Dakota Brown reached double digits with 10 points.

The Panthers led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Hillsboro came back in the second quarter to take a 35-31 lead.

The third quarter was pivotal for the Panthers as they out-scored Hillsboro 16-8 to take a 47-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Miami Trace won that period, 21-16 to take the 68-59 victory.

The Panthers made 25 of 60 field goal attempts for 41 percent. Miami Trace was 6 of 27 from behind the three-point line for 22 percent. They were 12 of 18 from the free throw line for 67 percent.

Hillsboro had a good shooting night, going 22 of 45 for 48 percent. From behind the arc, the Indians were 8 of 18 for 44 percent. They shot 7 of 11 from the charity stripe for 63 percent.

The rebounding edge went to Hillsboro, 31-27.

The Panthers’ defense helped provide the difference with 17 steals, helping to cause Hillsboro a total of 26 turnovers.

Miami Trace took good care of the basketball, with just nine turnovers.

Points off turnovers went heavily in favor of Miami Trace, 23-2.

The Panthers now get ready for the postseason as they open the Sectional tournament against the Waverly Tigers on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Southeastern High School near Chillicothe.

Hillsboro has a Sectional game Monday at 8 p.m. at Southeastern against Jackson. The winner of that game plays the Washington Blue lions on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
