Coach’s comments concerning leadership abilities

I have known Drew for four years and have watched him grow as a person and an athlete.

Drew is a goal oriented, dedicated and self-motivated individual. His work ethic is outstanding. He rises to the occasion and is at his best when his best is needed. His competitive nature makes him an outstanding performer under pressure. He also displays sportsmanship at all times and is an excellent role model. Drew is a tremendous leader and understands the importance of leading by example. He is well respected by his teammates and is extremely unselfish. He is a three year letter winner in Baseball and has been a starter on the varsity the past two seasons. He works very hard at being a leader on the field and has been a young man who is willing to go the extra mile. Drew is the definition of a student athlete and commitment to his teammates is extraordinary. He is a well-rounded individual with multiple interests and is highly successful in all the things he does. Drew is well disciplined, courteous, responsible and extremely reliable. Drew has also been a member of the varsity Soccer team the as well. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.

As an educator and coach I believe Drew epitomizes what a student/athlete should be. He possesses the qualities necessary to excel in college and in his future career. I give him my highest recommendation without reservations for this prestigious award.

Rob Smith, MT Head Baseball Coach

Drew is a fierce competitor. My first season coaching high school soccer at Miami Trace was Drew Batson’s freshman year. From the beginning he was eager to learn and was always outworking most of his teammates. He outworked the others so much that, as a freshman, he earned a spot in the starting lineup. There were 20 players in the program that season. Drew went on to be a four year starter for us and has been invaluable to me and the accomplishments of our soccer program. He was a huge contributor to the three sectional titles that we have earned in 2016, 2017, and 2018. These are the only three sectional championships Miami Trace has ever earned in soccer and our program was founded in 1989.

My assistant coach and I knew going in to the 2018 season that we would have a lot of coaching to do. We would only return 4 seniors and we had just graduated 7 starters. Over the three seasons that we have been at Miami Trace Drew had become a leader of the team. We were blessed to have such a good kid, with such a tremendous work ethic and a will to win, on our team. We named Drew as a team captain right away so that he could take charge of his team from the beginning. We had to revamp our defense and of course integrate new players on to the team and into the starting lineup. It all came together and Captain Batson was right there all along to support his teammates and lead the way. We set boys school records by earning the first #1 seed for the tournament, we allowed the fewest goals in a season by only allowing 25 goals, and we tied a school record by recording 7 shutouts. We also had the second best record in school history at 11-5-2. Drew’s senior class graduates as the only class of soccer players in Miami Trace history to complete their high school soccer careers with a winning record. A record of 34-33-5.

It is my honor to nominate Drew Batson for the 2019 Christman Award.
