Waverly Tigers top Panthers, 79-44

WAVERLY — The Miami Trace Panthers boys varsity basketball team played a non-conference game at Waverly High School Saturday, Jan. 26.

The Tigers won the game, 79-44.

Waverly came out with a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers led 43-15 at the half.

Waverly outscored Miami Trace by seven points in the second half.

Senior Austin Mathews led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points. He hit two of the team’s six three-point field goals.

Sophomore Cameron Moore scored seven points (including one three-pointer) and sophomore Dylan Bernard hit two three-point shots for six points.

Senior Ethan Dunn led the Tigers with 21 points.

Freshman Trey Robertson scored 10 points, junior Tanner Smallwood had eight points and sophomore Phoenix Wolf had eight points.

Sophomore Ethan Steele led the Panthers in rebounds with four. Junior Cody Brightman led the Panthers with two assists.

Senior Austin Brown blocked one shot and sophomore Logan Rodgers had one block. Mathews led the Panthers with two steals.

Smallwood led the game with seven rebounds for Waverly.

Marquez led the game for the Tigers with four steals.

Waverly connected on 32 of 62 shot attempts for 51 percent.

Miami Trace made 15 of 42 shots for 35 percent.

Waverly had seven turnovers while the Panthers had 22.

Miami Trace (1-16 overall) is back in action Tuesday at Wilmington with the freshman game starting at 4:30 p.m.
