Blue Lions win DH with Westfall

The Washington Blue Lion varsity baseball team hosted a non-league doubleheader at home against the Westfall Mustangs Saturday, April 14.

The Blue Lions won the first game, 10-9, despite being out-hit, 15 to 3.

Washington won the second game, 8-6

Pitchers walked a combined 23 batters in the game.

Eli Ruth, Jarred Hall and Nick Barrett each hit singles for Washington.

Ruth walked four times and scored three runs.

Christian Grove walked three times and scored twice for the Blue Lions.

Tyler Rood, Kenny Arboleda and Barrett each had two rbi.

Six players had two or more hits for Westfall, led by Hammond, going 3 for 4 with a double and three rbi.

Hugh Silberman got the win in relief for Washington. He pitched 1.1 innings with one hit, no runs, two strikeouts and three walks.

Grant Patterson started and pitched 2.2 innings with two hits, no runs and three walks.

Austin Joseph pitched 1.1 innings with six hits and four runs (all earned) and two walks.

Hall pitched 1.2 innings with six hits and five runs (all earned) and two strikeouts.

Westfall used four pitchers in the game, starting with Blackburn who worked five innings with three hits and five runs (all earned). He walked five and struck out nine.

Hammond pitched one-third of an inning with three earned runs and four walks.

Wyman pitched two-thirds of an inning with two walks and Spellman pitched two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout, four walks and two unearned runs. Spellman was tagged with the loss.

The Blue Lions led 3-0 after three innings.

Westfall took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth.

Washington went back in front, 5-4 with two runs in the fifth.

Westfall took a 9-5 lead with five runs in the top of the sixth.

Washington pulled to within one, 9-8, with three runs in the sixth.

The Blue Lions scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.

After the first batter was retired, Christian Grove drew a walk.

Eli Lynch reached on an error that allowed Grove to reach third.

Eli Ruth walked to load the bases and Jarred Hall hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Grove.

Kenny Arboleda then walked, scoring Lynch with the game-winning run.

Washington (7-2 overall) had their game Monday against Hillsboro postponed due to the cold weather. Approximately one hour before game time Monday, the temperature was 35 degrees with a wind-chill factor of 24 degrees.

The Blue Lions are scheduled to return to action Wednesday at home against Chillicothe.

In the second game Saturday, the Blue Lions defeated Westfall, 8-6.

Ross Matthews started and got the win for Washington. He pitched five innings with seven hits, four runs (two earned), five strikeouts and two walks.

Eli Ruth pitched two innings for the save. He allowed one hit and two runs (both earned) with two strikeouts and one walk.

Yarhouse started and pitched four innings for the Mustangs. He allowed five hits and five runs (four earned) with three strikeouts and five walks.

Lemaster came on in relief and suffered the loss. He pitched two innings with three hits and three unearned runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

The Blue Lions scored one run in the first and one in the second.

Westfall put a run on the board in the third inning.

Washington scored three in the fourth and Westfall countered with three in the top of the fifth.

Washington scored three in the sixth and Westfall scored two in the seventh.

The Blue Lions scored after two were out in the sixth.

Eli Ruth singled and stole second and Tyler Rood followed with a single, advancing to third on the throw.

Kenny Arboleda reached on an error that allowed Ruth to score.

Eli Lynch singled, scoring Rood. Arboleda, who had stolen second base, also scored on the hit.
