Lady Cavs win battle of top teams with Lady Lions

It was Blue and White versus Blue and White with the top spot in the SCOL on the line Tuesday when the Lady Blue Lions of Washington High School hosted the Lady Cavaliers of Chillicothe High School in varsity volleyball.

Both teams came into the match with just one loss in the league.

Washington had earlier given Chillicothe its only league setback, while Miami Trace beat Washington for the Lady Lions’ only SCOL loss.

Chillicothe came out and threatened to roll over the Lady Lions, winning the first two games of the match.

Washington fought back and won the third and fourth games to bring the match to the deciding fifth and final game.

Chillicothe won that game and moved into first place by itself in the SCOL standings.

Chillicothe won the first game 25-14 and the second game, 25-12.

With their backs against the wall, Washington won the third game, 25-19 and took the fourth game, 25-17.

Chillicothe got enough momentum back to take the fifth game, 15-8.

In the first game, Chillicothe led 8-4, 10-6, 18-9 and 22-14 on the way to the 25-14 win.

In the second game, Washington held a 6-5 lead, but Chillicothe soon began rolling up the points on the way to the 25-12 win.

Washington led the entire way in the third game.

The Lady Lions led by scores of 9-2, 12-9, 14-12, 20-12 and 23-19 on the way to the 25-19 win with an ace serve by Delaney Greer for the game point.

Washington arguably played even better in the fourth game, with leads of 7-2, 15-3, 19-6 and 20-12. Greer had the kill for the winning point that tied the match, 2-2.

Chillicothe took an early 2-0 in the deciding game to 15.

Washington tied the score, 3-3 and 4-4. However, the Lady Cavs would not relinquish this game.

Chillicothe led 6-5, 9-7 and 13-8 on the way to the 15-8 win that gave them the match.

“We started off slow,” Washington head coach Ashley DeAtley said. “Our serving got us in a hole.”

Down two games to none, DeAtley challenged her team to rise up and the Lady Lions responded.

“We told the girls to play with their hearts,” DeAtley said. “This is it. You’ve got to prove something here. You can either let them roll over you, or you can come back and fight. The girls chose to fight.

“We let the momentum carry us,” DeAtley said. “Well played really well, hitting-wise. We were making some smart plays and hits against them.

“Then, in the last game, Haley Maxie (the libero) got hurt and that kind of threw us off with our back row,” DeAtley said. “That gave them some momentum. When we got Haley back in, it was just too late to get us started. I think mental errors got us in that last game.

“I’m not disappointed in my girls at all,” DeAtley said. “They could have let themselves be steamrolled right over, but they gave them a fight.”

Chillicothe is now 7-1 in the SCOL. Washington is now 7-2 in the league.
