GROVE CITY — Making up a game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 13, the Washington Lady Blue Lions made the trip up to Grove City High School Thursday, Jan. 18 to take on the Greyhounds.

Washington won the game, 54-49 to improve to 12-1 on the season.

Junior Hannah Haithcock had an outstanding performance with 28 points and 20 rebounds for Washington.

Sophomore Rayana Burns reached double figures with 13 points.

Junior Kassidy Hines added five rebounds to Washington’s total of 44, which was 10 more than Grove City accumulated.

“We knew going into this game Grove City was much bigger than us and that rebounding was an important key to winning,” Washington head coach Samantha Leach said. “Hannah did an excellent job on the boards and finished with 20 rebounds.

“Hannah works hard. She commits a lot of time to the game, and is continuing to get better,” Leach said. “Grove City struggled to defend her tonight.

“Rayana also had a tremendous game finishing with a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds.

“It is always tough to win on the road at this point in the season, especially playing back-to-back nights,” Leach said. “We didn’t have our best game, and we made some mistakes I wasn’t pleased about, but I am proud of the girls.

“We have beaten two Division one schools this season and that is something everyone should be proud of,” Leach said. “Our girls’ work hard and it is paying off.”

The game was tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Washington outscored Grove City 20-8 in the second quarter for a 29-17 halftime lead.

Grove City had 32 points to 25 for Washington in the second half for the 54-49 final tally.

The Lady Lions return to Frontier Athletic Conference play at Jackson Saturday. The j-v game is at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity follows.
