The Washington Lady Blue Lion varsity basketball team traveled to Springfield Shawnee High School to take on the Braves in a non-conference game Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Washington won, 60-49 to improve to 10-1 on the season.

“Shawnee played us tough tonight,” Washington head coach Samantha Leach said. “They were 8-3, top of their league, and a very physical team. They rebound the ball well and we knew we had to control that battle (rebounding).

“I thought tonight was the best team effort we have had all year,” Leach said. “In the first half we found ourselves in some foul trouble. Our bench did an excellent job stepping up and making huge contributions with the minutes they played.”

Junior Hannah Haithcock was the game’s leading scorer for Washington with 21 points. She also had a team-high 12 rebounds for another double-double performance.

“Hannah controlled the paint and did a great job leading our team,” Leach said.

Sophomore Rayana Burns scored 12 points and junior Kassidy Hines had 10 points, including two three-point field goals.

“As a coaching staff we were very pleased with the effort from our team,” Leach said.

Lizzie Weaver hit five threes for Shawnee on her way to a team-high 17 points.

Washington was scheduled to play at Grove City Saturday.

That game has been cancelled, according to Washington High School Athletic Director Mark Bihl and no make-up date has been set.

Washington is scheduled to have a make-up game at home Monday against Leesburg Fairfield. As with all events this time of year, that will be weather permitting.

The Lady Lions are scheduled to host Chillicothe for a Frontier Athletic Conference game Wednesday.
