LANCASTER — The Washington Blue Lions made the trip over to Lancaster Tuesday, Jan. 9 to take on the Division I Golden Gales.

Lancaster won this non-conference game, 61-33.

The Blue Lions were led by junior Evan Upthegrove with 12 points.

Sophomore Garitt Leisure scored eight and sophomore Trevor Rarick had five points.

Dominic Boring led the Gales with 15 points.

Austin Gootee scored 14 and Jaycob England had 11 points.

“We got off to a bad start,” Washington head coach Shannon Bartruff said. “I called three timeouts in the first quarter.

“We made some plays early, got some deflections,” Bartruff said. “The deflections led to them gaining possession back out of the deflection and scoring right out of it. It seemed like every bounce that could go their way did. A little bit of that had to do with their hustle and effort. They converted on all of those. They scored 19 points in the first quarter.”

Washington trailed 17-3 at one point before the first quarter ended with Lancaster in front, 19-9.

Washington was down by 14 at the half, 34-20.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” Bartruff said.

Washington made 13 of 41 field goal attempts for 32 percent.

“At times I feel we are making strategic mistakes,” Bartruff said. “Where we are just not in positions that we need to be. Our effort is just not where it needs to be and that’s on me.

“I’ve got to do a better job of getting our guys ready to go,” Bartruff said. “We had a couple of really good days of practice leading up to this game.

“The big thing I was concerned about going into the game was their size,” Bartruff said. “We tried to start in a zone and they made some shots. We went to a man (defense) and we just struggled to guard them.

“We just have to continue to get better,” Bartruff said. “We can’t let our record dictate our effort.”

Washington, now 2-6 overall, will return to Frontier Athletic Conference action Friday at Hillsboro.

Saturday, Washington is scheduled to play at Gallia Academy.
