The Miami Trace Lady Panthers had a real tussle of a game against Wilmington Friday, April 21 at Miami Trace High School.
Wilmington kept the lead until the bottom of the ninth when Miami Trace scored three times to post a 12-11 victory.
“What a game to watch,” Miami Trace head coach Joe Henry said. “Neither team gave up. Wilmington has a great bunch of girls and a great staff to be around.
“We were very happy with how the girls handled the situation of the game,” Henry said. “They kept playing the game and believing in each other.”
Olivia Wolffe got the win in relief. She pitched five innings with one walk, one strikeout, four hits and four runs (one earned).
Maddie Mossbarger started and pitched four innings. She allowed seven hits and seven runs (two earned) with three strikeouts and no walks.
Wilmington scored five times right off the bat in the top of the first inning.
The Lady Panthers reacted by scoring two in their first turn at the plate.
Kaylee Hauck singled and Jessica Camp singled. They both scored on a single by Brooke Henry.
After a scoreless second inning, and with no runs from Wilmington in the third, Miami Trace tied the game in the bottom of the third.
Hauck reached on an error and Taylor Barrett hit a single.
Henry drove in Hauck with a single and Olivia Wolffe hit a triple, scoring two.
Wilmington regained the lead with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, going up 8-5.
Miami Trace scored two more runs in the fifth.
Lovett led off with a single and Ashley Campbell hit into a fielder’s choice.
Campbell scored on a single by Barrett, followed by a hit from Henry.
Wolffe’s fielder’s choice scored Barrett.
Wilmington held an 8-7 lead after six innings.
The Hurricane scored in the top of the seventh what they hoped would be an insurance run.
Miami Trace tied the game with two in the bottom of the seventh.
Campbell hit a home run and Barrett doubled with Camp bringing her in.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Wilmington put two on the board in the top of the ninth.
Miami Trace showed tremendous fortitude, rallying for three runs to win in the bottom of the ninth.
Henry singled and Ally Smith was sent in to pinch run.
Camp hit a double. With runners at second and third, Tori Riley delivered the game-winning hit down the first base line.
Miami Trace will host Clinton-Massie Friday. It will be Senior Day as the Lady Panthers recognize Tori Riley and Taylor Barrett.
