On a partly cloudy, then partly sunny Monday afternoon, the Miami Trace Panthers baseball team hosted the Tigers from McClain High School.

The Panthers won this game, 6-0.

Senior Skyler McDonald pitched a gem of a game, seven innings, no runs and only one hit. He struck out five and walked three.

Jay Beatty took the loss for the Tigers on the mound. He struck out three and walked four with eight hits and six runs.

John Saylers had McClain’s only hit on the day.

Brady Wallace went 3 for 4 to lead the Panthers’ offense.

The Panthers scored all the runs they would need, as it turned out, with two in the bottom of the second.

McDonald led off with a walk and stole second.

Jacob Batson singled, moving McDonald to third.

Batson then stole second, putting two runners in scoring position.

Logan Robinson reached on an error that allowed McDonald to score.

Batson scored on a passed ball.

The Panthers pushed two more runs across the plate in the third inning.

Brady Wallace had a bunt single and stole second.

Trenton Harris struck out but reached safely when the ball eluded the catcher.

Mitchell Creamer walked to load the bases and McDonald lifted a fly ball to right field that went for a sacrifice fly, scoring Wallace.

Batson walked to load the bases again and Robinson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Harris.

After a scoreless fourth, Creamer led off the fifth with a walk.

After Creamer stole second, a ground out by McDonald moved him to third.

Creamer scored on a sacrifice fly by Batson.

In the sixth, with one out, Josh Morton singled.

Wallace bunted him over to second and Harris singled, scoring Morton.

“Tonight was a good win,” Miami Trace head coach Rob Smith said. “We played solid, all the way around. In games like this, even though it was a nice day, you’ve got the wind blowing straight in, so, it’s a day when you’ve got to put the ball on the ground, play a lot of small-ball, things like that to score runs.

“Everything you hit that would normally be gap shots, which, we hit some nice line drives, just hang up,” Smith said. “Greenfield has definitely improved since we saw them early in the year. As good as Skyler pitched, they put the ball in play quite a bit.

“Skyler pitched a great game,” Smith said. “He had his curve ball working. Skyler’s either 4-0 or 5-0 now. He’s done a really nice job.”

Miami Trace is 13-3 overall, 7-3 in the SCOL.

On Friday, April 21, Miami Trace lost a tough one to Wilmington, 9-5 in eight innings.

In other SCOL games Monday, Hillsboro rallied to beat Washington, 13-7.
